The school was constructed at a cost of $18,200,000. It  accommodates 500 students and replaced a 1950's era structure. Mount Pleasant Academy is the oldest public school in South Carolina and celebrates its 200th birthday this year. The new Mount Pleasant Academy features a cupola and massive columns adorning it entrance. The theme of boats and water is reflected through the school. Different shades of blue and green are used throughout the building and lighted portholes adorn various walls. The front office includes a room dedicated to volunteers and the PTA. Teachers are able to use one of multiple teacher workrooms throughout the building. The art room has sinks and a kiln area and is connected to an outdoor patio where students can work on projects. The music teacher's room has special acoustic panels on the walls.

The new $34.4 Million Dollar Moultrie Middle School is one of four new schools that the Charleston County School District recently opened for the 2009-2010 school year. The others are Mt. Pleasant Academy, Orange Grove and Zucker Middle School. Smartboards are standard equipment in every teacher's classroom. The new building gives the middle school the room it needs to serve its 850 students. Moultrie Middle School has a strong fine arts department with a large chorus and band. The new music rooms accommodate a 250- student chorus and band. The band room's ceilings are at least 18-feet high and acoustic panels cover the walls and ceilings. Smaller practice rooms are adjacent to the main band room and connect to the choral room.

Students are separated by grades in three color-coded wings. Each grade level has a separate staircase, assistant principal offices, computer labs abd teacher work and conference rooms. The building has a number of green features, including the use of natural daylight. The media center has large windows and a balcony that overlook Coleman Blvd. Teachers are able to hold classes outside the building in an outdoor classroom that was built as part of the Farmer's Market. The school's art room has a kiln area and movable, weather sealed garage door that opens up to an outside patio. The schools cafeteria has outdoor seating. The school can be expanded to add space for 300 more students.

Wando High School

Wando High School has approximately 3000 students and is located on a 100 acre campus in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. It serves students in grades 9-112 with a comprehensive academic program offering more than 250 courses. Thirty-nine percent of the student body is identified as "gifted and talented." The student population is approximately 76% White, 19% African-American, 2% Hispanic and 3% other. The student - teacher ratio is 23:1.

Wando High School operates on a 4x4 modified block schedule which enables students to earn up to eight credits per year. Ninety-four percent of the 2008 graduating class attended four-year colleges/universities, two year colleges or technical colleges. Members of the class of 2008 received twelve million dollars in scholarships. Ninety-three percent of Wando students passed their Advanced Placement Exams.

Professional staff members have an average of 14 years of educational experience. 67% of faculty and professional staff hold masters or other advanced degrees. 30 Professional Staff members are National Board Certified Teachers.
